B2B growth and commercial strategy

Sustainable B2B growth is an engineering problem of commercial alignment, not a top-of-funnel volume game. GTM engines stall when marketing activity is disconnected from buying committee dynamics and unit economics.

The operator's thesis

Commercial foundations: what this discipline solves

Growth strategy in B2B is the deliberate architecture of go-to-market systems that align marketing, sales, and product around the real economic buying journey of your target accounts. It establishes clear commercial milestones, defines explicit channel roles across each stage of buyer awareness, and ensures every marketing pound spent translates into measurable pipeline.

Most B2B marketing underperforms because of structural silo fragmentation: marketing measures lead volume while sales measures revenue; channels compete for credit rather than collaborating; and brand messaging addresses individual users rather than executive buying committees. The unit of work is never the channel; it is the commercial buying journey.

Three non-negotiable operating principles

PRINCIPLE 01

Map the distributed buying committee, not fictional personas

Enterprise purchases involve commercial, technical, legal, and financial stakeholders. Every asset and campaign must provide the specific evidence required by internal champions to secure executive and budget sign-off.

PRINCIPLE 02

Align channel roles to buyer awareness and decision stages

Organic search captures active intent; paid media isolates in-market accounts; authoritative content arms buyers during vendor shortlisting. Channels must reinforce, not cannibalise, each other.

PRINCIPLE 03

Enforce strict qualification SLAs and pipeline velocity

Generating inquiries without qualification creates sales friction and distorts acquisition economics. Enforce clear lead scoring, qualification criteria, and sales acceptance protocols.

Strategic interaction and cross-channel compounding

Strategy without disciplined execution is mere conjecture. An integrated GTM framework connects top-of-funnel demand generation with middle-of-funnel consideration and bottom-of-funnel sales enablement, governed by weekly steering cadences and monthly pacing audits.

What I deliberately do not optimise for (anti-patterns)

  • Top-of-funnel lead generation metrics that fail to convert into sales opportunities.
  • Tactical channel redesigns or campaign launches before commercial unit economics and ICP parameters are verified.
  • Growth hacking gimmicks that produce temporary metric spikes at the expense of enterprise brand trust.
